The Becchi Fair in the village of Romagna
A fair rooted in rural tradition
In a nutshell
In Santarcangelo, giant horns adorned with colorful knitted cords, which were once used to decorate ox horns at fairs, are hung under the arch in Ganganelli Square during the fair. The festival is known as the "Fair of the Beaks" (of goats or horned men) because tradition has it that the horns swing as people who have been betrayed pass under the arch.
During the fair there is no shortage of stalls where local food and wine specialties are offered, such as roasted chestnuts and Cagnina, a sweet wine much consumed in Santarcangelo. Also held during the festival are the "Sagra Nazionale dei Cantastorie" and the "Palio della piadina," during which people challenge each other in the preparation of piadina with the typical filling of the village, made with sausage and onion.
