The Feast of Saints Cosmas and Damian in Sferracavallo
A unique procession in Italy
In a nutshell
In Sferracavallo, a hamlet of Palermo, the last week of September holds a historic festival in honor of Saints Cosmas and Damian, protectors of the sick and fishermen.
The event is unique and consists of several different side activities such as a historical regatta with rowing boats, fireworks displays on the Sferracavallo pier, and the traditional game of Antinna a mari, where a log is suspended over the surface of the sea, covered with soap and a flag is placed on it, which must be grabbed by the players before falling into the water.
The most exciting moment, which makes this event special and unique in the world, is the procession of the Saints, which is carried out barefoot and at a very fast pace, almost running from those carrying the simulacra of the Saints. The bearers of the simulacra wear a white dress with their hips and necks wrapped in a red kerchief, the color of martyrdom.
The procession is as enthralling as it is tiring because it lasts nearly 12 hours. Before the conclusion, moreover, the bearers dance a waltz with each other.
