The Carrese in honor of St. Leopard
Traditional float parades and processions for Larino's patron saint
In a nutshell
For three days at the end of May, Larino celebrates its patron saint with religious rites and side events including the Carrese: the re-enactment of the translation of the saint's body from Daunia on a wooden farm cart decorated with flowers and pulled by a pair of cows or oxen.
The feast follows a precise ritual: on the first day, the colorful procession of about 120 wagons) begins, reaching Piano San Leonardo, where the statue of St. Primian is picked up and "invited" to participate in the feast. The next day, the floats travel through the streets of the old town followed by the "Procession of the Thirteen Saints," which are carried on the shoulders of the town's men. On the last day of the feast, the floats return to the Piano San Leonardo to reposition the statue of St. Primian, and before returning to the historic center, the people of Larina indulge in a merry picnic. At the end of the meal, the procession starts again to conclude with a mass in the Cathedral.
The "Carrese" is also a form of religious monodic singing that celebrates God, Our Lady, St. Pardo and St. Primian and is sung during the event.
