The Medieval Octave of Orte

From August 31 to the second Sunday in September, an ancient palio is held in Orte (since 1359) in honor of the patron saint. During the event, the village's seven contrade compete in various contests and games, such as medieval wooden archery, with which they compete for the silver ring on the last day of the Palio. For two weeks, the beautiful village in the Viterbo area is enlivened by medieval music concerts, fortune tellers, juggling shows, stilt walkers and stunning fire games. The centuries of the Middle Ages come back to life in the artisans' workshops, processions in 14th-century costumes and taverns, where people taste traditional dishes with genuine flavors, such as "tisichelle," sweet doughnuts to be accompanied by excellent spiced Vin Santo.
