The traveling medieval nativity scene in the village of Bocchignano
An evocative re-enactment of the Nativity on December nights
In a nutshell
Bocchignano, an ancient village perched on a mountainside, gathered around narrow streets and small squares, glows with lights on dark December nights. It is the village's traveling Medieval Nativity: the streets come alive with characters dressed in medieval fashions recreating scenes inspired by Guido Gozzano's poem "The Holy Night" and Cardinal Hispano's pastoral visit in 1343. The figures of Joseph, tired from the long walk, and Mary, now nearing the end of her pregnancy, stand out above them all. They seek shelter here, in Bocchignano, not far from the village of Greccio, where centuries ago St. Francis began the tradition of the Sacred Representation. Come and immerse yourself in this atmosphere suspended in time, almost magical, of a Christmas of yesteryear.
