The Palio Marinaro of the Island of Giglio
A race that evokes tales of ancient battles
In a nutshell
In the beautiful setting of Giglio Island, the Palio Marinaro has been held for more than 50 years. It is a regatta in which the town's three districts, Chiesa, Moletto and Saraceno, compete.
The race is held every year on August 10 - the Feast of the Patron Saint Lawrence - and competes in rowing boats, on each of which there are four rowers and a coxswain.
The race is opened by a parade of crews in traditional dress and with performances by street performers.
