In a nutshell
In the municipality of Saponara, an ancient carnival is celebrated every year, dating back according to sources to the 18th century.
Tradition tells of this animal that tormented and ravaged the town and surrounding countryside. The animal-a bear-was captured by Prince Domenico Alliata di Giovanni and carried triumphantly in chains through the streets of Saponara.
On Mardi Gras day, a procession of masks parades through the streets of the town, the main ones being those of the Bear, the Tamers and Hunters, the Prince and his court of Knights, and the Players of brogna - a shell that is used as a musical instrument. The parade ends with the dance - in the Matrix Square - of the Bear and the Prince.
Kiosks are set up for the occasion where typical carnival dishes and local food products can be tasted.
