In a nutshell
The Byzantine New Year is one of the most important events on the Amalfi Coast and is held right in the most representative village, Amalfi, amidst medieval atmospheres and rediscoveries of the past. Among pages, ladies and knights the coronation of the new Magister of Amalfi Civilization takes place.
The Ancient Maritime Republic, together with the adjoining town of Atrani, confirms itself as the scene of an extraordinary historical event that draws inspiration from the political greatness of the civitates to offer a carnet of high-profile cultural and spectacular events. On August 31 and September 1, in fact, Amalfi and Atrani re-enact with the Byzantine New Year the beginning of the fiscal and legal year in the era of the Eastern Empire of which Amalfi was a peripheral autonomy.
For two days the whole community and the many tourists celebrate the event full of initiatives and attractions.
