Feast of Our Lady of Health in Venice
Historical pilgrimage in memory of the miracle that freed Venice from the plague in 1631
In a nutshell
During the plague epidemic that struck Venice between 1630 and 1631, Venetians stayed three days and nights in prayer as a vow to Our Lady, begging her to rid the city of the disease. Once the contagions decreased, the Basilica della Salute was erected, around which pilgrims gather in prayer on November 21 each year to commemorate the historic event.
On the occasion of this feast, which is particularly felt by the Venetian people, a temporary bridge is built across the Grand Canal, connecting the two areas of the island. Among the calli and campielli we find entertainment events, candy stalls and various kinds of tastings. It is traditional to eat "castradina," a typical Venetian soup made with mutton, cabbage and onions, on this day.
