A "Small Ancient World": Villa Fogazzaro Roi
A pleasant and quiet corner of the world dear to dreamers and artists - Antonio Fogazzaro
Where is
What it is and where it is
"I keep at Oria, on the shores of Lake Lugano, a little villa beaten by the waves at the foot of a mountain clothed with olive trees, vines and even laurels, which no poet before me, has gone to seek." What better description than that of Fogazzaro himself to let us perceive the beauty of this place of peace and harmony, protected by the wonderful village of Oria in the province of Como, on the Italian shore of Lake Lugano. The green mountains are reflected in the waters of the lake, and it is here that the characters of his famous novel Piccolo Mondo Antico, published in 1896, come to life.
Why it is special
Entering Villa Fogazzaro takes you back in time, with views and vistas that inspire poetry even to those who are not poets. It's easy to imagine yourself in nineteenth-century clothes intent on choosing a book from the splendid library and then going to read it in the quiet of the garden, choosing to sip tea from a porcelain cup in front of the fireplace in the living room or playing tarocco as the protagonists of "Piccolo Mondo Antico" did.
Not to be missed
The Villa's lakeside location allows us to see Italy on one side and Switzerland on the other. Today we, in Fogazzaro's time, all happily fall victim to the charm that this view gives off in every gradation of color, in every reflection of the sun. This is also the starting point of the ancient road that runs through the entire village of Oria to the Swiss border.
A bit of history
In the 19th century the villa was owned by the Barrera family, the family of Fogazzaro's mother. The building was built on a pre-existing construction dating back to the 16th century and, as Fogazzaro wrote in his novel, still has a garden with olea fragrans plants. The villa was donated to FAI in 2009 by Fogazzaro's great-grandson, Marquis Giuseppe Roi.
