Santacittarama Buddhist Monastery
Practice and meditation inspired by Thai forest tradition, in the heart of Latium
Where is
What is it and where is Santacittarama
Among the silent hills of Lazio, on the border between the towns of Frasso Sabino and Poggio Nativo, stands Santacittarama, a Buddhist monastery that seems to be a world apart. In this place, founded in 1990, you won't find frescoes or artistic treasures, but a deeper richness: peace. Here, the air is fresh, the silence is broken only by birdsong, and nature envelops everything.
Why it is special: the monastery park
Santacittarama is not just a place of worship; it is a refuge for anyone who wants to disconnect from the daily hustle and bustle and immerse themselves in the present. Its simplicity makes it extraordinary: a monastery nestled in a 13-hectare natural park, traversed by a stream, and enhanced by caves that house statues of the Buddha. The beauty of the place lies in the stillness that pervades it, ideal for those seeking tranquility, meditation and reflection.
Not to be missed: meditation retreats
Attending a meditation retreat is a life-changing experience. Here, it doesn't matter if you are a beginner or an expert: you can immerse yourself in silence, in the practice of walking and sitting meditation, letting your mind get rid of daily worries. Monks, such as Ajahn Chandapalo, with simplicity and kindness, guide visitors toward the discovery of an inner calm. The silence that reigns among the hills and the monastery grounds creates a perfect atmosphere for meditation.
A bit of history
Mario Thanavaro, the first abbot of Santacittarama, was one of the pioneers of Theravada Buddhism in Italy. Under his leadership, the monastery laid deep roots and saw a growing community of practitioners. Today, the monastery is led by Ajahn Chandapalo, who continues to keep the Thai forest tradition alive , offering teachings and retreats open to all.
Fun fact: The ancient cemetery
Santacittarama hides an evocative and little-known place: an ancient, deconsecrated cemetery nestled in the monastery grounds. This space is used by monks and visitors for deeper meditations dedicated to reflecting on the meaning of existence. Walking through the monastery's paths, listening to the sound of the wind in the trees and the gurgling of water, allows anyone to confront life's most intimate themes.
