SHARRYLAND
Where is
What it is and where it is
On the heights of Vendone, inland from Albenga, 35 monoliths form a circle that seems to want to connect the verdant plain with the sky and the wide horizon. It is indeed a striking image that urges one to get closer to learn more. It is at this point that one notices the carvings that furrow the white marble of the end, sharp lines that create mysterious symbolism, almost as if we were in the presence of a magical portal through which to admire the marvelous panorama that descends to the sea.
Why it is special
If the description of the structure reminded you of Stonehenge, know that you are not alone: this place is called "the Ligurian Stonehenge" even though it is a contemporary work by sculptor Rainer Kriester. In spite of its "tender age," this sculpture park boasts an element that the beautiful Stonehenge now knows no more: peace and solitude. This, in fact, is an off the map art site, unknown to most, including Ligurians!
Not to be missed
I recommend visiting the park at sunset time, when the rays of the sun, descending behind the hills, cut through the stone, creating an atmospheric and magical atmosphere.
A bit of history
The park is the largest collection of the works of the German sculptor, Rainer Kriester, who in 1982 made the Albenga hinterland his new home and studio. Kriester thus abandoned his initial terracotta creations to devote himself to working with stone and marble. The meaning of the carvings on the monoliths is unclear and undefined, probably a simple expression of his whim.
Curiosity
Of all the works, the essential sculpture consisting of three smooth marble blocks assembled to form a doorway, looking out toward the plain below and the boundless sea, attracts attention. Apparently, these pink blocks on the day of the summer solstice are charged with light as the sun rises, transforming into a veritable magical portal.
