What it is and where it is
The Cathedral of San Daniele del Friuli, dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel, is the town's main church. It is located in the town's main square; indeed, it dominates it from the top of its steps. This elevated position emphasizes the importance of the building even more, and allows the elegant white facade to stand out even better among the surrounding buildings.
Don't miss
The snow-white facade of the Cathedral of San Daniele del Friuli is both gentle and imposing thanks to the skillful use of soft Baroque lines. Once you pass through the bronze doorway, you find yourself in a large and solemn space, which holds some gems such as the 16th-century baptismal font, or the Trinity canvas painted by Pordenonde.
A bit of history
The history of the cathedral dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel is that of a survivor: the first cathedral had already been erected around the year 1000, but in the 1300s it was destroyed by a ruinous earthquake. Between seismic events and wars, the cathedral has always managed to save itself or rise from its ashes. The façade we see today, for example, was rebuilt during the 18th century, and it passed almost unscathed the bombings and shellings of World War II.
Trivia
The coat of arms of the municipality of San Daniele del Friuli depicts a white St. Andrew's cross on a red background. The reason for this symbol is to be found inside the cathedral. When it was consecrated in 1372 after an initial reconstruction, relics of some saints were placed inside the altar. Among them was a fragment of the cross on which St. Andrew's martyrdom took place.
